ARCH 744 ARCHITECTURE STUDIO V: COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN
PROFESSOR BUNDIT KANISTHAKHON
Fall 2023, this studio focused on the research and exploration of the construction material and method of Precast Concrete. We applied Precast Concrete in building design in an appropriate and responsible manner, with a specific focus on designing with Precast Concrete in Hawaii with its unique climate and geographical location. In collaboration with Cal Poly Pomona Department of Architecture, supported by the Precast Concrete Institute (PCI).
Precast Concrete utilized in the design and construction of lightweight modular emergency shelters, taking advantage of modular system of thoughtful pre-design.

KAPIOLANI COMMUNITY COLLEGE
MODULAR HOUSING UNITS SITE ANALYSIS
Students were required to select a site and conduct site analysis. Chosen site was Kapiolani Community College.
Kapiolani Community College is located in the city of Honolulu - Oahu. There are 8 major Hawaiian Islands and Oahu is one the smaller islands. But the island of Oahu has the highest population and density. Oahu is home to University of Hawaii at Manoa, Chaminade University, Hawaii Pacific University, and a few community colleges. Oahu’s tourist industry fuels a unique economy for attractions like Waikiki, Waikiki Beach Park, Ala Moana, and North Shore. But, the high annual tourism presents a housing crisis where housing demand is so high and housing infrastructure is so little.

EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER AND MODULAR HOUSING UNITS
Kapiolani Community College is around 43.5 acres of land located on the northeast side of Diamond Head Crater. Diamond Head road runs directly south of the campus and is the main circulation outlet for “The Bus” or other methods of public transportation. Not pictured - is KCC Culinary Institute of the Pacific located on the opposite side of Diamond Head road - southwest of KCC Main Campus. Current masterplan consists of 20 main structures built in 5 phases - 5 different building life cycles exist.

KAPIOLANI COMMUNITY COLLEGE
EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER AND MODULAR HOUSING UNITS
Proposed site is on the Northeast side of KCC Main Campus - on the corner of Kilauea Avenue and 18th Avenue. There are no existing buildings that are located on site. An existing parking lot directly east of our site provides adjacent vehicular access from 18th avenue. There is a harsh 50’ slope that exists from building 18 to mentioned parking lot. Minimal terracing and landscaping exist within the slope. An existing pedestrian walkway connects building 18 and mentioned parking lot - directly through the site. Also, on site are large PV Solar Panels that intersect with the location of our housing units.
